Mariam Mayat is a founder of the African Centre for Biosafety (ACB) a non-profit organisation working to protect Africa’s biodiversity, traditional knowledge, seed systems, genetic diversity, food production systems, culture and diversity from the threats of genetic engineering and industrial agriculture.



The African Centre for Biodiversity (ACB) is campaigning against the GMO banana, being developed in Innisfail and the GM cow pea, developed and funded by the CSIRO and the Grains Research and Development Corporation. The ACB has just released a new report : GM and seed industry eye Africa’s lucrative cowpea seed markets: The political economy of cowpea in Nigeria, Burkina Faso, Ghana and Malawi.
